morning to you. the idea is that you can pay up if you want to get there faster. solo drivers can use the express lane and this is for carpoolers. now if you are a solo driver and you are tired of sitting in traffic, maybe a little bit late, you can decide whether the cost is worth it to you. this runs on southbound 680 from pleasanton to milpitas. there three entry points and we will tell you the price. from 30 cents to $6. you pay using your fast track tran responder. this is new for the area and a spokesman said he knows there will be a learning curve. >> this is new for northern california. it will take time for people to understand how it works. during that process, people get it fast. mostly it's the same people driving. they will learn it and it's a great thing for bay area commuters. >> the chp is ready with extra enforcement as well. solo drivers would get ticketed if they are in the carpool lane. they are using their own tran responder reader to make sure that the solo droifrs are legitimately in the lane. if not, if you are caught doing it, the usual rules apply and the tic

morning at 6:00 on this tuesday. we have a lot of developing news for you. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. let's get to it. forgot my own name. late and breaking news following all morning. imprisoned hiker and cal graduate sarah shore released from prison. jenelle, tell us more. >> this is such great news. just came down in the past hour. american sarah shore has been released for more than a year in prison. those closest to her expected something to happen today but basically this release out of the blue. her family didn't even have a heads up. we did get a statement from a state women rights organization saying they're feeling sad that sarah has to leave her fiancee shane and best friend josh. they're still in prison, that's in iran. but, of course, this is great news that sarah shore has been released. the three u.s. berkeley graduates captured in july 2009 after crossing the border between northern iraq and iran. iran accuses the three of spying and illegally entering the country. the family insists they were hiking and entered the country accidental

first kron4 a cake thompson joins us live. they're letting us know where federal but authorities are in the investigation. >> federal authorities are looking for information. dave heard reports in claims of people in the neighborhood smell gas . they're asking one in december know whoever reported smelling gas to please contact them. they're also looking into it anyone who might have dead vegetation in their yard, that could be a clue there was a ghastly. and they're also looking for people to give on that information. they're asking for cell phone video out surveillance video, anything out of the ordinary that could help with this investigation. because they still have clearly not been able to determine what caused the blast. today they said they bought an additional investigators to help them out. >> we have added two additional staffers to help us with the work. when we have started to do, document the damage, document the fire, the heat, the fatalities the injuries. the more that we can document the exact location and the extent of damage and injuries. the better we're able t

's kind express toll lane will open on interstate 680. >> the drivers will use the new 14-mile southbound expressway lane from pleasetantton to milpitas. it allows you to use the lane for a price. that starts out at just 30 cents when there's no traffic but as the freeway gets more congested, the price goes up to as much as $6. drivers need a fas trak transponder and signs alert the drivers to the designated entry and exit points. we'll have a live report from jenelle wang in the next half hour and megan will have traffic updates throughout the morning. >> traffic use has grown since 2006 when officials set a goal of 70% usage. the latest survey shows that goal has almost been reached with 68.6% of bridge users now having fas trak. the number of morning drivers on the bay bridge using fas trak has nearly doubled to nearly 77%. >> pg&e could release a list of its 100 riskiest pipeline locations as soon as today. this comes after pressure from federal and state leaders including governor schwarzenegger. the utility isn't saying exactly what it plans to do but it could release the list along

in santa rosa. at noon the warm upstarts. most of us reaching the 70s. the city will be at 87. at 4:00, a bit breezy and that's the sea breeze for the inland areas. coming up, a hot weekend forecast. possibly seeing triple-digit temperatures. >> getting warm out there. new this morning, it's a tense morning for families forced out by a new gas leak. this comes on the two-week anniversary of the san bruno explosion. christie smith is live in orinda with what's going on out there this morning. christie? >> good morning. i have new information for you. i just got off the phone with the city manager who is on scene and told me that pg&e capped the gas leak. natural gas is not leaking anymore in the downtown area. it's still not a clear scene. here's what we know. it was about 11:15 last night and an outside contractor was work on a paving project near mo raga way and a back hoe hit a gas line. there were reports that this was a six-inch gas line and neighbors in about a dozen homes were evacuated, but it was actually a two-inch gas line. people were allowed back home quickly. for now, n

morning. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. topping our news this half hour, pg&e is investigating the possibility that microbes inside a natural gas pipe might have caused the deadly san bruno explosion two weeks ago, this unlikely but has happened before. jenelle is live in san bruno to tell us more. >> yes, it has, ten years ago in the new mexico desert that pipeline ruptured killing 12 including three young children. investigators found pitting in the pipeline. the corroded area spread across 21 feet of the pipe and some areas 72% of the pipe wall had been eaten away. now, that pipeline in new mexico was over 50 years old and 30 inches in diameter. those are the exact same specs as the pipeline here in san bruno. the possible cause is called microbiological influence corrosion. this report came out in the san francisco chronicle this morning. it's basically micros that go undetected in a tiny pool of water inside the pipeline and then start eating away at the metal causing it to corrode. according to the article this morning, pg&e told state regulators last y

.m.. thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. the deal with that developing news we're talking about in the south bay where san jose police are on the scene of a fatal car accident. one person is dead and there are injuries. theresa garcia is live there in san jose with more. theresa? >> well, certainly this single car crash woke up enough people that a san jose dispatcher tells me they were receiving multiple calls of reports that they heard a loud crash, they heard an explosion, saw a fire and eventually when the san jose emergency responders got out here, take a look behind me, this is what they found. you've got an intersection completely shut off right now. it was just after 3 a.m. a white 2001 ford explorer driving south hit a pole, then possibly a tree and became completely ungulfed in fire. this happened at the intersection with o'grady drive. the emergency responders found an 18-year-old male passenger dead in the car. the 18-year-old male driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. the problem out here is we're getting mixed reports

to use. >> one of the reasons that you might need to point tell is that to the delays are point to be later. this does not have any traffic impact and there is no rush of cars the airline debt using to wait that ramps of there is no reason for them not to go ahead and take their time and get the work done now. these are the perils that are being replaced and just to be cleared this is not affecting the right west 80 or the east the traffic is flowing to the east bay 37 though as they're trying to get onto columbus parkway. that is the extent of the traffic. the west bound traffic in go to redwood, turn around and come back and it will be able to get on the east on columbus there. but as a key to the bridge check, there is no high spots it is looking good and even with the activation of the metering lights we do not have any back up on the approach and the center lanes look good. for the bay bridge and the cemetery ridge drive looks good. no problems here and let us look right to the going rate, not only is there light traffic on the bridge of light traffic through marin county f

, the calendar says summer is over but mother nature seems to be ignoring it. our anne makovec joins us now from walnut creek to explain that pg&e is urging conservation this morning. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. here in downtown walnut creek, it is hanging around the lower 60s. you can see from this live time and temperature behind me. it's going to get up to 102 here in walnut creek. that creates two issues. number one, it's a "spare the air" day and the possibility of power outages so many people are running their air- conditioning it could lead to overload. that's what happened in castro valley this weekend. more than 30,000 pg&e customers lost power for almost three hours on saturday night. pg&e says it was a heat-related equipment failure issue. the mere thought of not having ac can have us sweating. but this may make things easier on the power grid. shut your windows and keep blinds closed in the morning, right now, to keep cool air trapped in the home. try to remember to turn off lights and appliances either right now or before the sun comes up. do your best to use them

uvando used it to beat his girlfriend a 33-year-old. authorities say the man called several people after the alleged beating as he drove around with the body in the front seat. he eventually showed up at a coworker's apartment. the coworker called 911. then the man surrendered and confess, according to police. >>> after calls from politician and the public, pg&e has now posted maps showing the locations of the riskiest gas pipeline in the state. pipe segments get on the list based on four criteria. first, will there or has there been third party construction nearby? is there any pipe corrosion? has there been any land movement near the pipes, such as an earthquake? and finally, the pipe's age, design and what it's made of. the pg&e president christopher johns says these factors constantly affect the list. >> this list is in flux. some items will move up, some will move down the list. >> pg&e says the san bruno section of pipe that exploded was not on the top 100 list. when the utility finds out what caused the explosion, it might have to change the criteria. the maps on the website aren'

's a wednesday at 6:00. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. topping our news looks as though california's first execution in five years will not take place at san quentin this week and probably not this year. a federal judge has changed his mind and put off tomorrow's scheduled lethal injection. abc 7's terry mcsweeney is at the u.s. 9th circuit court of appeals. that's where the attorney general will be. >> attorney general jerry brown wants the execution to go forward. they will file with the 9th district court of appeals today. that's because the u.s. federal judge jeremy fogel reversed his decision from just last week and was saying the execution could go forward as long as rapist albert brown had a choice of the method of execution either the one-shot or three-shot technique. the 9th circuit returned fogel's initial decisionsy saying that the one-shot method isn't offered in california so he couldn't be offered that. the protocol he objected to in 2006 hasn't been fixed. >> they say what's called the con

.m.. as mike said, the first day of astronomical fall. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. developing news in downtown orinda where commuters can expect a few delays maybe this morning as pg&e tries to cap a gas leak. a construction crew hit a gas main around 11:30 last night near camino pablo. about a dozen homes were evacuated but all residents have now been allowed to return to their homes. city officials say the leak is near the on-ramp to eastbound 24 but say a detour has been put in place. this is the third significant gas leak reported in the last 24 hours in the bay area. yesterday morning crews dealt with a gas leak on the cal state east bay campus in hayward and last night a small leak forced the closure of el camino real in millbrae for two hours. >> bulldozers head out to the san bruno neighborhood devastated by natural gas and fire. the goal is remove demolished homes. >> the cleanup crews will come in at 8:00 this morning to clear out this debris. they're expected to be here the next four to six weeks. the first job to remove close to two dozen charred ca

bruno, bracket. >> thank you. >> simon perez joins from us bayhill shopping center a major gathering spot for the evacuees. >> reporter: good morning. you can see behind me the red cross truck is here. they are certainly helping many of those people who had their homes either completely burned to the ground or had a lot of damage done to it. you can see some of the video there. dozens of homes that burned and more that are damaged. one person confirmed dead and dozens hurt. many people taking themselves to the hospital. some with severe burns, others with smoke inhalation, some in nearby hospital, others as far as san francisco. saint francis burn unit was treating some of the people last night. this is going to be a pretty difficult search operation, certainly not rescue but a search operation as cadaver dogs go through some of the rubble this morning. mainly, that's because many of the people if there are any left inside pretty much would have been incinerated. this fire was so hot, i was here last night that it just eliminated the houses almost instantly. you see skeletons, chimne

and a chance for some showers by the weekends we will get their into the weekend. let us take a look right now, i will see mind as storm is expected to pull into the area. even throughout the day we actually could see the showers will toward north and there's probably a chance to to get into our area through the north bay and it is sunday morning that record to see some sprinkles starting to play a bigger role in our forecast by 5:00 our worst expecting light showers all the way into san rafael. the golden gate bridge and as we head into 7:00 hour. really, most people will make up and feel the rain out there. but is expected to grow up rest of the morning and into the afternoon and insets day it is a better chance of picking up showers in the afternoon all the way to 5:00 bringing as raindrops into the forecast and even into the evening we could still be dealing with widespread rain. it is not by 9:00 or 10:00 that we will be seen that push on out and along the peninsula as well. right now are fog tracker is showing that the north bay along the peninsula and into the east bay and even pushing
